I could swear there was a book that analyzed comics as a medium and was written by a European with “Thierry” somewhere in his name. I thought Fantagraphics published it, but the company’s site doesn’t list anything like the book in its section on pure-print titles. Anyone?
This one, I think. http://www.amazon.com/System-Comics-Thierry-Groensteen/dp/1578069254
Thierry Groensteen.
University Press of Mississippi did that one; I’ve got a review in TCJ #284, the Roger Landridge cover.
It’s quite a good book…if a little heavy on academic style jargon (and examples in French which are challenging to the monoglot)
Thank you, gentlemen. McGill doesn’t have the book, but I can read what Bill had to say about it.
I bet some bookshop down on St. Denis has it in French if you need a headache.
(I like the book a lot, but you’ll probably hear the veins in my neck popping in my review. There’s two reviews in the issue, BTW. Summary of the other one: “it’s too hard.”)
I just read the reviews and now I’m going to order a copy. Deep theory about anything isn’t my cup of tea, but from what you say the book sounds like it could address some questions I have.
I see what you mean about the other review. Odd, because the guy seems smart and for most of the review he seems to be gearing up for an argument against the value of theory. Then he punts and spends the last couple of paragraphs saying the book’s writing is just too high-faluting.
