Those covers are beautiful. Do you know, was he influenced by or interested in Japanese illustration? Especially the top one with the dramatic composition seems like it might have been.
I wish I liked Eisner’s writing more; I tried to read some Spirit a while back and just couldn’t manage it.
noah, i've read some eisner auto/biographies, & while i don't remember him talking about japanese illustration, i seem to remember he became notorious around his studio for using cheap japanese-imported brushes that no one else could get the hang of.
he may well have been exposed to obscure (at the time) japanese illustration at the same time.
I don’t know anything about E’s influences except he must have had a lot of them.
What’s Japanese about the covers here? I’m guessing the leaves in the second and the figures being so small against the logo in the first.
The top one especially; that kind of dramatic use of blank space is something that I associate with Japanese prints (though it’s been an influence for over 100 years on the West now, of course.) The tree in the second one as well…and again, the use of blank space. and in the first one the caricatured giant face with the weird scale…well, here.
if the use of blank space is japanese, it's been influencing western illustration for a long time. i mean, american advertising illustration had a lot more blank space than we're used to now, right? & what about the early rockwell saturday evening post covers?
Yeah, a very long time. It’s his drawing style too, though, and even his color palette. It just looks like he’s seen some Hokusai.

Anyway, glad you enjoy the covers. They’re from my dad’s collection, which has now been sold. I made some scans first and like to show them off.
The Eisner Mondays should go on for 6 weeks or so, and on Thursdays I put up more or less random Golden Age covers. I think the emphasis is going to be on odd-looking horror and s.f. covers, because that’s mainly what I’ve got.
