A nice write-up by Peter Suderman; the consensus seems to be, pretty good, but not much like the original series.

That review was spot-on. It’s a fun summer blockbuster, but it doesn’t attempt to address humanistic issues like the original Star Trek. Any plot problems are quickly forgotten because of the rapid pace. Some people at the theatre were commenting that it was the Star Wars-ifcation of Trek, but the humor, dialog, and acting set it apart from anything by Lucas. Maybe the sequel will try to be a little more thoughtful.
Noah, I’m trying to contact you re: a possible speaking engagement at the small college in Virginia where I work. Would you please email me at tmunson at rmc dot edu , at your convenience? Thank you, Todd Munson
I agree with Bryan. It took Star War’s pacing(and even some design.Don’t tell me the Narada’s cockpit didn’t remind you of the Millenium Falcon’s gunner area?) but took a more exaggerated humor level from the 60’s show. If Abrams is able to pull off a socially-minded sequel, fans will come to look at this Trek as a decent movie but wasn’t really Trek. Right now, they’re just happy to have the old girl back in form while Star Wars is the lame science fantasy franchise.
