Utilitarian Review 6/16/12

I’m going to be moderating a panel on queer anthologies at the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) tomorrow. Here are the details.

3:30pm – 4:30pm, 8th Floor Auditorium

Queer Communities, Queer Anthologies

with Annie Murphy, Justin Hall, and Robert Kirby
moderated by Noah Berlatsky
sponsored by Little Heart, a Comic Anthology for Marriage Equality

A sense of aesthetic community is perhaps one of the most essential and undefinable aspects of assembling an anthology. Similarly, defining a queer community can be both incredibly tricky and unconditionally inspiring. The editors of three powerhouse LGBTIQ comics anthologies discuss the overlap and feedback between grouping and identity and what forms of community queer comics can build.

If you’re in Chicago, come see us! And check out the rest of CAKE programming too; it looks pretty awesome.

  1. The Tomb Raider thing *really* pisses me off. I love Lara Croft and I played those games religiously. There’s a trailer up of the scene in question, and despite the supposed retraction (it’s not really attempted rape) it really is attempted rape. Fucking bastards. Sloppy storytelling and idiotic psychology.

Also, if you’ve come to the attention of MRAs, you’ll probably be on their radar for a while. At least based on my experience. Batten down the hatches–they can get pretty creepy.

  2. Ah…MRAs are men’s rights activists. I get it. Well, I don’t really care that much what happens in comments elsewhere, and if they show up on HU I’ll just ban their sorry asses. I’ve got better things to do than waste time with that kind of idiocy.
