The index to the Indie Comics vs. Context roundtable is here.
____________
We had some fun playing with google trends and indie comics in the comments of this post, so I thought I’d fiddle with it some more.
Garfield vs. Spiegelman. Brutal.
Garfield vs. Penny Arcade. Closer than I’d thought.
Fantagraphics vs. Comic-Con. Also a bit unexpected.
Chris Ware vs. The Hernandez Bros.
Alice Munro vs. Alison Bechdel.
Craig Thompson vs. Anthony Trollope
Marjane Satrapi vs. Chris Ware
Matt Groening vs. the Simpsons
All right, that’s enough. Play along in comments if you’d like, though.
Suggesting one amendment: Chris Ware vs. Robert Crumb produces opposite results.
http://www.google.com/trends/explore?q=comics#q=Chris%20Ware%2C%20Robert%20Crumb&cmpt=q
Every time I click on “Marjane Satrapi vs Chris Ware” I get “Craig Thompson vs Anthony Trollope” instead.
Whoops; fixed Satrape vs. Ware; sorry about that!
The 0 headlines ever result for “Spiegleman” looked fishy, probably because noah misspelled Spiegelman. I’d accuse him of deliberately tipping the scales for some nefarious nerd zing purposes, but, well, he doesn’t fare much better with the propper spelling: http://www.google.com/trends/explore?q=comics#q=garfield%2C%20spiegelman&cmpt=q
although it should be noted with the propper spelling, he seems to average about 1 headline per month, which i guess isn’t really terrible.
also both maus vs. garfield and spiegelman vs. jim davis are a lot more appropriate and both seem to be much closer races. (sorry, noah).
argh; sorry. Fixed the spelling.
I do like Garfield more than Maus, I think, but not by an exponential amount or anything.
Yeah, Art Spiegelman vs Andrew Garfield, star of Spider-Man, certainly is brutal.
Is that what we’re getting? I don’t even know who Andrew Garfield is.
Here’s the Jim Davis vs. Art Spiegelman graph, fwiw. Not as lopsided, though Davis still wins.
http://www.google.com/trends/explore?q=Jim+Davis%2C+Art+Spiegelman#q=Jim%20Davis%2C%20Art%20Spiegelman&cmpt=q
Not to mention the fact that there are way more publicly active Jim Davis-es in America than Art Spiegelmans. Google Trend – fail.
Liking Garfield more than Maus is certainly something to be proud of.
Yeah; I wasn’t entirely sure how to do that one, I have to admit.
I really don’t like Maus. Don’t like Garfield a whole lot either, but more than Maus.
I may like Maus more than Doonesbury, though.
As I said before, Garfield & Maus would seem to be a more appropriate comparison as well, and that one is much closer:

Or maybe John Maus is skewing those :).

Also, good point about Andrew Garfield. If you could correct for that maus might even “win”.
